PGWA PRESENTS ‘A BANNER NIGHT’

An Evening of Women’s Wrestling in Tribute to a Legend

Penny Banner was more than just another lady wrestler. During her 23 year career (1957-1977), which coincided with the so-called ‘Golden Age of Women’s Wrestling’, she set standards and achieved successes that made her a major figure in her day and an icon for the generations that followed.

Some fans know her as the first woman to hold the American Wrestling Association’s Ladies Championship, others for her years of packing arenas across the United States and Canada; some even recall her having dated Elvis Presley in the 1950s (Elvis was a big wrestling fan, and whenever Penny would work in Memphis, he and his friends were always at ringside to cheer her on!). Outside of the ring, Penny was also an accomplished competitive horsewoman and businesswoman, and in her latter years she was a multi-medalist in the Senior Olympics.

Penny Banner was also the Commissioner of the PGWA, a position which she held since the organization’s founding in 1992. Although no longer a wrestler herself, Penny took seriously her duty as a role model for newcomers to the sport. She was also disturbed by the growing trend in women’s wrestling at the time to focus on what became known as “T&A” rather than actual athletic ability. In her estimation, the ‘Evening Gown Catfights’ and such gimmicks were killing the sport she loved. In her position as commissioner, she dedicated herself to the PGWA’s mission of preserving and promoting the ‘Old School’ style of pro wrestling. The means of doing so were to host all-ladies shows, to book individual women’s matches on various independent promotions’ cards, and to publicize the ladies in both print and, with the development of the internet, online.

And the PGWA’s success speaks for itself. At the time of its founding, women’s pro wrestling was seemingly on the verge of extinction in the U.S., with few organizations even bothering to book female wrestlers on their shows any longer. But in 2008, women wrestlers are more popular than ever, and a number of other all-female promotions have joined the PGWA in presenting women’s shows. And the PGWA’s official website, LadySports Online, has been visited nearly three million times since its relaunch in 2003.

Through it all, Penny Banner served as not only a symbol of the PGWA’s growth, but also a cornerstone of its success.

Sadly, after a valiant battle for several years, Penny succumbed to cancer early in 2008.

Now, in honor of both the woman and the legend, the PGWA is presenting “A Banner Night”, bringing together some of the most talented women in the sport of professional wrestling today, with each match on the card dedicated to Penny’s memory.

Headlining the card will be a PGWA Title Match, featuring the champion, Nikki Roxx (aka TNA Knockout ‘Roxxi Laveaux’), against former WWE Diva, Tracy Taylor of Hawaii. Also slated to appear will be Mia Martinez, Scarlett Rose, XTC, Sassy Stephanie, Angel Dust, Sarah Lynn, Josianne Pussycat and Jamie D (both from Canada), and Tennessee’s own Tasha Simone, Susan Morton and Su Yung.

Additionally, joining us will be Wendi Weaver, the daughter of both Penny Banner and another pro wrestling legend, Johnny Weaver. Wendi will present a Penny Banner Spirit of Excellence Award to one of the participants at the show.

The ultimate result will prove to be, we hope, a fitting way to honor our friend and idol.

This very special show will be held on Saturday, November 15 at the SAW Arena,
1214 B Louisville Hwy in Millersville, Tennessee (just north of Nashville). Bell time is 7:30 PM, and tickets are $10 at the door.

The month of July is unique on the CHIKARA calendar! We're offering up just one giant, star-studded card, on Sunday afternoon, July 13th, at our homebase of the New Alhambra in Philadelphia. This one will be a card on par with our very finest stand-alone events, and every loyal member of the CHIKARMY will want to be on hand when "Tragedy and Triumph" plays in South Philly!

Among these is the long-anticipated rematch between the two largest men on our roster - Brodie Lee and Claudio Castagnoli. Their two previous bouts have ended in disqualifications, and for that reason, our Director of Fun Leonard F. Chikarason has stipulated that the bout will have No Disqualification, but will have 2 officials assigned should the action get out of control.

In addition to which, tag team partners will collide when "Lightning" Mike Quackenbush takes on his protege and partner Shane Storm, in a match signed by the Director of Fun just this past week. Rumors sparked over Young Lions Cup weekend seem to indicate that Shane Storm taught the counter to the CHIKARA Special to Chris Hero last November, and our company founder wants answers. He may get them when Quack and Storm meet in their first ever singles encounter!

Due to circumstances beyond our control, the MSCW show for June 8th in Bowling Green, KY was canceled. With that said Mid-South Championship Wrestling returns to Bowling Green, Kentucky on Sunday night June 15th for "Homecoming."

MAW Returned to the Daisy in April and now presents Anarchy in June! 4 Big Matches have been signed which features the war that continues between KC Gold and Derrick King. KC Gold has enlisted his Veteran of TFO, Johnny Morton to take out Derrick King.

In April, the team of "Irish Dragon" Scott Fury and Memphis 10 winner Austin Lane defeated Chris Lexx and The Crime in a non-title bout to earn their #1 Contendership to the Tag Team Titles. On June 15th, they will will get their shot at the gold.

The Associates do battle as the man paid by Derrick King, Big Country takes on KC Gold's paid bodyguard, Armageddon in a Anything Goes, Hardcore match. There is a good chance blood will flow this Father's Day when anything that isn't nailed down can be used as a weapon.

For the past few months, Danny B Good and Dre Black have passed each other on the roads in other promotions and it was Dre Black who cost Danny B his shot at the Memphis 10 tournament. These two are arguably battling for a shot at the MAW Heavyweight Championship. A title currently held in limbo.

"Hacksaw" Jim Duggan's WWE Contract Changed

WWE has changed "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan's contract from a regular talent contract to a WWE Legends deal, which would allow him to make appearances outside of WWE. Basically, he can take indy bookings now. However, he'll still be used at RAW tapings, so he's not leaving television quite yet. He did a "Kiss Cam" segment this past week and wrestled at last week's Heat taping.

MSCW in Morgantown, KY on May 31

Mid-South Championship Wrestling brings wrestling excitement to Morgantown, Kentucky on Saturday night May 31st at The Charles Black City Park. This will be an outside event on the baseball field at the park. Gates open at 6 PM with wrestling action starting at 7 PM. Admission is $6.00 for all seats. Children ages 4 and under are admitted FREE with a paid adult.

We have two big main events signed. JW Wildfire & The Night Stalker will bring their war to Morgantown when they do battle in a "Hardcore Street Fight." Then, "The Headliner" Chris Michaels will go one on one with "Cowboy" Bud Ellis for the Mid-South Heavyweight title. We hear that Mid-South Commissioner, Jason Triplet has been in meetings all week with Mr. Michael's attorneys. We understand that "The Headliner" wasn't to thrilled about having his Mid-South Heavyweight title stripped from him in Brownsville last month. Therefore after meeting with his attorney’s he has awarded the title back to Chris Michaels.

WWE Returns to Montgomery, AL

WWE returns to the Garrett Coliseum in Montgomery, Alabama on September 15th, 2008. This will be the first WWE event in Montgomery since early 2004. Tickets go on sale August 8th, 2008 at 10 AM.

NWA Anarchy has announced Fanfest 2008 for May 31, featuring a fan carnival and fan appreciation show with tickets at half price. The carnival will start at noon with face painting, barbecue, and the chance to mingle with your favorite Anarchy stars. Special events include "Dunk the Punk" with John Johnson, "Get in the Booth" - an opportunity to call a match with Greg Hunter, and "Shout at the Devil" - first time fan Q&A with Devil's Rejects, and it's all for a good cause.
